Greetings from the Waste Management of Hawaii ohana (family)! We are proud to report exciting news on our operations and in our community.

Waste Management of Hawaii partnered with The Hawaii Food Basket, Inc., on the Big Island in March and donated $10,000 as part of its spring food drive, “Waste Not, Want Not.” As part of the campaign, 45,000 paper bags were inserted into copies of West Hawaii Today, Hawaii Tribune Herald and North Hawaii News to help The Food Basket reach their goal to raise $40,000 and collect 50,000 pounds of food and fulfill the more than 12,000 requests they receive monthly.

One in eight children live in poverty on the Big Island and Waste Management of Hawaii is doing its part to help. During March, Hawaii County’s hungry received much needed relief when Waste Management donated $10,000 to The Food Basket, Inc. in support of its spring food drive, “Waste Not, Want Not.”

Waste Management of Hawaii recently announced the launch of Thinkgreen.com, an interactive Web site that supports Waste Management of Hawaii’s ongoing efforts to educate the public about what happens to its opala (trash). The project is designed to inform the public of things they should know, but are probably not aware of regarding the business of managing the 10 pounds of waste the average Hawaii resident generates each day. The interactive site, which tells the story of rubbish from the curbside onward, highlights how advanced technologies are recovering resources and protecting our aina (land).

Aloha to our new market area engineer, Jesse Frey, who joined us in November 2007. Jesse enjoys a unique position here at Waste Management of Hawaii and serves as a consulting engineer, focusing on solid waste design and management on all three sites: Kekaha, West Hawaii and Waimanalo Gulch landfills.
